Seemingly infite industrial sites, high velocity infrastructure, the sound of water washing against the quays. This is the experience our researchers had when they went the Botlek for a camping trip. The Botlek was constructed between 1954 and 1960, one of two major port zones designed and constructed during the reconstruction era. Mostly aimed at petrochemical industry, the sheer size of these sites was a consequence of the enormous growth of oil consumption in Europe after the war. The Botlek is characterized by inaccessibility, out-of-scale infrastructure and other civil works, and extreme automization of the industrial process.
